COMIC-CON 2007! SCREENINGS APLENTY!
I'm not gonna lie. I'm not much of a comic book geek. I go to Comic-Con for the stellar film presentations. I also go for the numerous film screenings that occur during the course of the week. We've caught wind of some films that will be playing throughout the convention. I suspect there are plenty more, but at the moment, these are the one's we're aware of.
FLASH GORDON
Universal Pictures is presenting a special showing of this cult classic in honor of the upcoming DVD release. Featuring a memorable score by Queen and perfectly over the top performances by Timothy Dalton and Max Von Sydow, this epic bit of sci-fi camp is not to be missed.
Where: Pacific Gaslamp Theater in downtown San Diego
When: Friday, July 27th at 10:00 P.M.
This screening is opened to the public on a first come, first serve basis.
MONSTER SQUAD
I love, love, love this movie. Like The Goonies and Explorers, it's one of those flicks that instantly takes me back to the magic of 80's childhood innocence. Directed by Night of the Creeps helmer Fred Dekker and co-written by Predator scribe Shane Black, Monster Squad tells the fantastical story of a group of childhood buddies who join forces to put a stop to the fiendish Count Dracula, a legendary vampire who hopes to dominate the world with the aid of several world renowned monsters.
The screening will include a Q &A with the cast and crew.
I'm still trying to get more information on this one. I've been told the screening will take place on Saturday, July 28th, at the Gaslamp Theater. When and if we get all the details, we'll post them here.
CASSHERN
I don't know much about this Japanese hit, but it has a pretty big cult following. The film was made by acclaimed music video director Kazuaki Kiriya and blends live action and Japanimation, resulting in a unique, visual landscape. I'm always on the look out for something new, and this one sounds compelling to me. I'll definitely be there.
Where: UA Horton Theaters-Downtown San Diego
When: Thursday, July 26th at Midnight
This is a first come, first serve screening.
These three screenings are all but confirmed. I've also heard whispers of a special "Shoot ‘Em Up" screening and I have a sneaky suspicion that the much talked about "Superbad" will be shown at some point during the week.
In addition to these theatrical presentations, Comic-Con also has extensive late night programming, in which they showcase numerous digital screenings late into the evening. They usually keep the titles under wraps until convention time, but if you've pre-registered for con passes, you can view the film schedule over at comic-con.org.
