80th Academy Award Nominations
With Commentary from the Insightful One "Acadam Mast"

I guess the big question on everyone's mind right now is will The Oscars happen or will we get a no frills press conference like we did with The Golden Globes. The Academy is stating that the show will go on, only without a writing staff. Should be interesting to see how it all goes down. In the meantime, we have the nominations, and for the most part, there are no big surprises. I suppose there are a few noteworthy exceptions, but there's nothing here that completely blows my mind. I will say I'm as happy as a little girl that Once got a Best Song nomination, but I'm not at all happy that the Acadamy completely ignored Eddie Vedder's beautiful tunes from Into the Wild. While we're on the topic of Into the Wild, Sean Penn's film certainly isn't feeling the love. It was virtually ignored as was David Fincher's spellbinding Zodiac. I'm not really surprised at the Zodiac snub though. That film didn't exactly light up the box office. Furthermore, many folk found the procedural crime drama tedious. Whatever! As for all the love being showered on Michael Clayton? I couldn't tell you. It's a really good movie, but it isn't a classic. On a final note, I couldn't be happier for Jason Reitman. Juno emerged as 2007's independent darling. While I believe Once to be the indie gem of the year, I thought Juno was great as well and it's wonderful to see the film well represented. Well, it's early and I'm going back to bed. Here are the nominations and some comments.

It's a thrill to see Tommy Lee Jones up there. I didn't think he had a chance. No one saw In the Valley of Elah, but for my money, his work in that was even stronger than his work in No Country For Old Men. I'm a little surprised that Denzel Washington isn't up for American Gangster, but it doesn't really bug me. It would have been nice to see Philip Seymour Hoffman up there for The Savages. In the end, all the actors up there are more than worthy, even Viggo Mortensen who is, perhaps, the biggest surprise in the category.

Good for Affleck. He definitely deserves to be in the mix. Missing in action; Ben Foster for his wonderfully confident turn as Russell Crowe's right hand man in 3:10 to Yuma. Come to think of it, 3:10 to Yuma is nowhere to be found. A shame. A great film. Great to see Hal Holbrook up there. He's just amazing in Into the Wild. If there's an upset this year, it could be Holbrook winning over a captivating Javier Bardem.

I'm a little surprised that Keira Knightly didn't make the cut for Atonement. While I wasn't a huge fan of the film, I thought for sure she'd get a nod. No Angelina Jolie for A Mighty Heart either. It's great to see Laura Linney up there. And God bless Ellen Page. It would have been nice to see Nikki Blonski up there for her infectious turn in Hairspray. And how about Christina Ricci for her fiery, uninhibited work in Black Snake Moan? Still, all around good picks.

Great picks, but they should have extended this category to five films. That way, The Simpsons and Beowulf could have been included.

I'm really happy for Diablo Cody, but where the hell is Judd Apatow. He had a banner year and proved that there is a market for R rated comedies. Knocked Up and Superbad were hilarious. I suppose they were a little too raunchy for Academy members. On a final note, it's great to see Nancy Oliver up there. Lars and the Real Girl is one of those love it or hate movies. Personally, I loved it. Wonderfully written.
