So the Oscars have been handed out. There were a
couple of surprises, but for the most part, it was the
"No Country For Old Men" show, as expected. I have to
say, I didn't see the Tilda Swinton win coming. I
thought Cate Blanchett had that one bagged for portraying Bob Dylan, fitting that Tilda
Swinton accepted as David Bowie. I also
thought Roger Deakins would win the cinematography
award for one of his two amazingly well shot pictures
(No Country For Old Men, and The Assassination of
Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford). Still, There
Will Be Blood was more than deserving of the award.
The highlight of the evening? Falling Slowly winning
Best Song, no question. Glen Hansard was incredibly
gracious, and it pissed me off when they cut Marketa
Irglova off with a music cue. Happily, when the awards
telecast returned from break, the lovely Ms. Irglova
was invited back to the stage where she proceeded to
give the most heartfelt speech of the evening. God
bless her. John Stewart did a great job hosting. He
may just be the best Oscar host since Billy Crystal.
Overall, a pretty smooth night. See ya next year!
