Blind-sided by the Sportsmanship of this Classy Vet!
I've always liked Sandra Bullock. Dating back to her entertaining performances in Demolition Man and Speed. She followed up those actioneers with charming, girl next door turns in films like While You Were Sleeping. While I've always enjoyed Bullock, I never really looked at her as Oscar material. This isn't a stab. It's just an observation based on the kinds of films she's chosen to do through the years. That changed a bit when she played against type in Crash. That was a smaller role to be sure, but it showcased a side of this likable gal that we hadn't seen before. In 2009, Bullock had a banner year starring in a massive flop (All About Steve), and two of the biggest films of her career (The Proposal, and The Blind Side). With The Blind Side she earned an Oscar nomination for her charismatic performance as a tenacious woman who takes a teenage African American into her family's circle, and simply gives the young man a chance to excel in life.
Those who read this site are already well aware that I didn't fall in love with the film in the same way the rest of the planet did. I liked the movie. Its well intentioned and sincere, and falls right into the feel good category, but I felt like the film's depiction of the upper class white family completely overshadowed what the film really should have been about; Michael Oher. Before anyone loses their head, know that this is just my lame ass opinion. Having said all of this, Bullock is outstanding in the movie. I don't know that I would have given the Oscar to her over Meryl Streep, Gabourey Sidibe, or Carey Mulligan (didn't see The Last Station so I can't comment on the venerable Helen Mirren), but I wasn't disappointed that she won. Sandra Bullock is a class act. The female equivalent of George Clooney. Michael Dequina over at movie-report.com is right on the money in his suggestion that these two should do a film together. To give you a bit of a look at this wonderful performer's humility, check out the following link. I wish all celebs were this playful and self effacing. On a final note, the lovely Ms. Bullock took part in this special celebration the very same weekend she received an Oscar. Like I said, a class act and a hell of a good sport. Sandra Bullock is my new hero. Check this out.
