Despite being the butt of all jokes for his cringeworthy couch-hopping antics and the sneers he's caused from his blunt critisism of psychiatry, actor Tom Cruise has reclaimed his No. 1 spot on Forbes magazine's annual list of the world's 100 most powerful stars.
The magazine ranks the stars according to their earning power, web references, press clips, TV/radio mentions and the number of times a celebrity's face has appeared on the cover of 26 major consumer magazines for the 12 months beginning last June. Cruise's big film last summer, "War of the Worlds," grossed a whopping $591 million (319 million pounds) worldwide, while this year's "Mission Impossible III" has generated $329 million so far. "Love him or hate him, Cruise is Hollywood's most bankable actor," the editors
wrote. "All the headlines, combined with Cruise's box office success, demonstrate he still commands attention. "Cruise, who ranked No. 10 on the Power 100 list last year, also topped the list in 2001.

Last year's top-rated celebrity, chat show queen, Oprah Winfrey, slipped two notches to No. 3 this year, despite expanding her multimedia empire with her Tony-nominated Broadway production of "The Colour Purple". Rounding off the top 10 were Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, radio star Howard Stern, rapper 50 Cent, the cast of HBO's mob drama The Sopranos" and "The Da Vinci Code" author Dan Brown.
