Don't B Afraid . . Dark - Del Toro's Newest..
Don't Be Afraid of the Mark
GUILLERMO DEL TORO AND TROY NIXEY SAY AUDIENCES WILL TREMBLE FOR FEAR OF "DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK" (2010 Comic-Con) Alright ladies and you gentlemen. Look up at the screen! Now drape those wimpy eyes! Now look back at the screen! Its pitch dark and you hear an eerie voice. Now look down at your pants! Oops! Too Much Liquid Butter on the Popcorn? Back to the screen! Cinematic gold! Could it be? A horror film being produced by the man with a golden hand in the arena of genre film-making? Could Don't Be Afraid of the Dark be the winner this panel made it out to be? It will be if producer Guillermo del Toro and director Troy Nixey have anything to say about it. I am, in most regards, a huge fan of the horror genre. I grew up with watching horror films while other children my age were watching Saturday morning cartoons. There is a certain morbid glee that bubbles to the surface when I am watching a great horror movie. I'm all about atmosphere and I believe Guillermo Del Toro to be a master when it comes to this particular style of film making, even when he's only on hand as a producer. That's why I am so excited for this upcoming project. Heavy-weight (no pun intended) del Toro and newcomer Nixey bring us up to date with this new film, a remake of the 1973 made for TV movie, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." Starring blink and her career was over Kim Darby, that's True Grit to you pilgram. Del Toro mentioned suggested that there's a huge difference between a money hungry Hollywood remake in comparison to a redo crafted by film makers with genuine love for the source material. He said this is the reason most Hollywood remakes "SUCK!" I happen to support that particular theory. Nixey seems like a good man for the job and leave it to del Toro to assist and bring in a crew that actually aspire to update the source material all while paying loving homage to it. We were shown a short trailer for the film. 6000 of us simultaneously jumped out of our collective skins, leaving soiled undies behind for the custodial staff to take care of. They then showed us an 8 minute clip. I hate spoilers and while this article is meant to get folks excited about the film, I really feel like I'd be doing you a great disservice by revealing too much. I'll just say that I didn't want it to end. Though asked to keep the language mild for there may be children in the crowd, Del Toro could not hold his tongue as he peppered his enthusiasm with a bit of vulgarity. He was a lot of fun and a certainly knows his stuff. I am greatly anticipating this films arrival. The tease was so good that I can't stop thinking about it. I look forward to Troy Nixey's upcoming projects and hope he learns a great deal working with the gifted del Toro. Sleep well while you can people, because after viewing Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, you may never sleep again. On a side note, del Toro was visibly bummed when asked about his having to leave The Hobbit, but he said that he's only leaving as director. He'll still be a major creative force in the much anticipated project. He also announced that he's co-penning a new film adaptation of the famed Disneyland attraction, The Haunted Mansion. Without Eddie Murphy of course. I CAN'T WAIT!
