SHOWEST 2010--LIONSGATE PRESENTS A SCREENING OF KICK-ASS
There's been tremendous buzz surrounding Kick-Ass ever since director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) unveiled footage at last year's Comic-Con event in San Diego. It was, perhaps, the most talked about presentation at the con. Not too shabby for a film being profiled alongside potential juggernauts like New Moon, Alice in Wonderland, and Avatar (all three of those pictures went on to become monster hits). Oddly, Kick-Ass didn't even have distribution at that point, but that all changed once Lionsgate swooped in for the kill. Ever since, Lionsgate has been pimping the shit out of it! Kick-Ass has already screened at several events including Aint-It-Cool-News' Butt-Numb-A-Thon where it was proclaimed by several attendees the best film of the fest. Our own music guru Kyle England saw the film a few weeks ago and called it "an entertaining fusion of Superbad and X-Men!" Suffice it to say, when I heard Kick-Ass would be playing at ShoWest, I was ecstatic. Upon waiting in line for the screening, I bumped into the founders of firstshowing.net and slashfilm.com. Alex and Peter both told me they had already seen Kick-Ass but that they were planning on watching it again. This only added to the big time expectations I already had for the movie. You're probably thinking I'm gonna be a total kill-joy and tell you that Kick-Ass sucked. On the contrary, quite the opposite. There hasn't been a more appropriate title for a film this year. Kick-Ass does in fact KICK ASS! Before the screening, the head of Lionsgate introduced his in house staff. Unfortunately, no one from the film production was there, but Lionsgate did have one additional treat for the eager crowd; a trailer for Sylvester Stallone's actioneer The Expendables.
Some of you are probably saying to yourselves "A new Sylvester Stallone film? Who gives a shit?" Well first of all, Sly has enjoyed a nice little comeback with Rocky Balboa and Rambo, and secondly, The Expendables is a violent action opus starring Stallone, Jason Stathum, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Terry Crews, Brittany Murphy, and...Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger! Sly, Bruce, and Arnold in the same film? I think I just had an explosion in my pants! The trailer was a lot of fun and it featured pretty much everything you'd expect from a cast like this. In a stroke of absolute genius, the trailer ends with Sly, Bruce, and Arnold engaging in an epic conversation for the ages. While I'd prefer to see these three blowing shit up as opposed to talking, it was still cool as hell seeing these cinematic heavyweights in the same frame together. It was like watching Pacino and DeNiro in that diner scene in Heat for the first time. The Expendables was the perfect opening act for what is surly to be one of the most entertaining films of the year. It should be noted that Kick-Ass is a hard R and it wears it's rating like a badge of honor. This high octane comedy (based on a comic book series by Mark Millar) tells the story of a dweeb who takes the law into his own hands after becoming increasingly irritated by the social disintegration of his neighborhood. Kick-Ass is irreverent, irresponsible, and reckless and I loved every second of it. It manages to breakdown the superhero archetype all while remaining a solid entry in this increasingly popular genre. Oh, and did I mention that Kick-Ass is a laugh out loud riot? In fact, I laughed heartily throughout the movie. For my full review, hop on over to the Movie Reviews page. Kick-Ass opens on April 16th.
