I've never been a huge fan of disaster epic helmer Roland Emmerich. I suppose Universal Soldier and Stargate had moments of cheesy goodness to offer, but I find Independence Day extremely overrated. Sure, I loved the special effects (that shot of the White House exploding still holds up in the shock and awe dept) but ultimately, that flick is bogged down by silly humor and a lame final act. Independence Day simply does not hold up to repeated viewings. Not for me anyway. I suspect Transformers will have a similar effect on some folks (myself included). Even Emmerich's The Patriot (somewhat the departure for this particular film maker) couldn't really find its footing. For the most part, it played like an inferior version of Mel Gibson's own Braveheart. And don't get me started on the complete and utter waste of celluloid that is Godzilla. Well, after a four year wait (his last film was 2004's eco-disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow), Emmerich is back, and this time he's going wayyy back to the dawn of man with 10'000 B.C. The trailer has elements of Quest for Fire and, surprise, Mel Gibson's Apocalypto. Visually, it looks fine, but it's hard to get a grasp on what the plot (if there is one) might be. (Maybe the invention of fire or the wheel or the haircut) Over at Aint-it-cool-news, they've got a test screening review of the film followed by a clip from one of my all time favorite Prehysteric adventures, the zany Ringo Star epic Caveman. Who knows what to expect from 10'000 B.C. We'll find out in March of 2008. In the meantime, here's a link to the trailer. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809724938/video/3317950
