BLUE VALENTINE - SUNDANCE 2010
This tale of a disintegrating marriage - think Revolutionary Road with the narrative structure of Godfather II - features a truly remarkable performance by Ryan Gosling. Sadly, Michelle Williams isn't nearly as interesting. This isn't to say she's bad. She's emotionally and physically uninhibited here, but I never found myself caring about her. This is a movie more interested in asking questions than giving answers. That's fine, but in order for a film like this to truly work, we have to get more of a sense of why the couple fell in love in the first place. Good, but not quite the powerhouse I was hoping for.
