A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is the most profane and irreverent holiday film since Bad Santa. But is it any good? Well, it isn't in the same league as Terry Zwigoff's dark holiday flick aimed at folks who don't like holiday flicks, but it does offer up a handful of hilarious (if a tad disgusting) laughs. Laughs that are amplified by glorious 3D. Seriously! I think I got high off the smoke seeping from the screen. Once again, its Kal Penn and John Cho who take us on this latest stoner journey but as a pair, these two guys aren't particularly engaging. Its the outlandish situations and the supporting cast that provide the real humor. A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas isn't the funniest movie of the year but its certainly the most non-pc, and it is this political incorrectness that will polarize audiences. Some will laugh heartily at it while others will be completely offended. I'm really in the middle of the road on this one. Perhaps I would have been wise to witness this movie in 5D (if you catch my drift). Maybe then it would have worked its magic to full effect.
As it stands, I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh a handful of times. The mere sight of a claymated Harold and Kumar, and the inclusion of perversely funny nod to Christmas Story were certainly highlights. Oh, and did I happen to mention that a dynamic Neil Patrick Harris returns as a hyper real version of himself? Its a small bit of screen time but he makes the most of it. This is hardly a Christmas classic, but if you're a fan of Harold and Kumar in general, you should go home happy.
