This tale of a disintegrating relationship - think Revolutionary Road with the narrative structure of Godfather II - features a truly remarkable performance by Ryan Gosling. Michelle Williams (whose both raw and uninhibited) is the object of Gosling's dysfunctional affection. This is a tour de fore of virtuoso acting but at times, its too much of a downer. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance gives his expert leads free reign to roam emotionally (much of the film is improvisational) and Gosling and Williams are completely up to the challenge.
I just wish there was a little light at the end of the tunnel. Furthermore, there were times when I wasn't entirely certain why these two fell in love in the first place, but then, such is life. A powerful film, but a truly devastating one. If you're a fan of remarkable acting, this is a must. If you like your love stories with a happy ending, you may want to sit it out.
