Have you been waiting for a raunchy comedy in which women are front and center? Then Bridesmaids might be for you. Featuring the hilariously gifted Kristen Wiig, Bridesmaids weaves its tale around a woman (Wiig) who vies for the affection of her soon to be married best friend (played by a wonderful Maya Rudolph). Wiig's competition appears in the form of a seemingly perfect do-gooder (played by Rose Byrne) who swoops in and all but steals her thunder.

Bridesmaids is at times vulgar and irreverent, but the film is at its best when it's focusing on Wiig's insecurities and her yearning to find a fulfilling life of her own. Bridesmaids is episodic in nature and while many of the biggest gags are labored (watch as the bridesmaids suffer from food poisoning while trying on expensive dresses at a posh wedding gown boutique), but I should confess to laughing on several occasions.

The writing could have been a bit sharper and the movie could have been shorter, but Wiig is a true talent and she keeps the proceedings more tolerable than they might have been otherwise. It helps that Wiig is complimented by terrific supporting players like Jon Hamm and Jill Clayburgh. I also quite enjoyed scene stealer Melissa McCarthy as a zany blowhard with a heart of gold. There's a lot going on in this picture (including a sweet, but oddly developed courtship between Wiig and Chris O'Dowd's John C. Reilly inspired police officer), perhaps too much, but at the very least, Bridesmaids manages to strike a stronger balance of raunch and heart then a film like Hall Pass. And again, its near impossible to not fall in love with Wiig--a true movie star in the making.
