For those of you that were bored stiff by that remake of The Time Machine, be warned. If you didn't like that, chances are you'll hate Clockstoppers, the new sci-fi flick from director Jonathan Frakes (Riker from Star Trek The Next Generation).

In Clockstoppers, Jesse Bradford plays Zak, a high spirited high school student with the same aspirations as nearly every other teenager. He desperately wants a car and a girlfriend. The mischief begins when Zak finds himself the owner of a new watch. This is no ordinary watch however, as it is actually a high tech gadget capable of slowing down time. Thus, Jesse and his new girlfriend Francesca are plunged into an adventure that pits them against a loony inventor (French Stewart), a group of ass kicking thugs and a stereotypical bad guy (Michael Biehn).

As I watched Clockstoppers, I was slightly reminded of The Girl, the Gold Watch, and Everything, a silly little TV movie from the 80's. Of course Clockstoppers is heavier in the effects department, but it's hardly a memorable movie experience.

I must admit, that going in I was a bit curious. I am a fan of Frakes the director. I thought the last two Star Trek pictures were very good, and was interested in seeing what he might do with a different kind of project. Sadly, he seems out of his element here. The pacing is off and there is very little tension. I also got really tired of the dumb bike riding sequences. While Clockstoppers does offer some decent special effects, it is lacking in energy, character development, and a sense of danger.

It should be noted that this is a Nickelodeon production, so it is aimed at a younger crowd, but even they will most likely be disappointed by the fact that nothing very interesting happens.

It was reported that Frakes was offered a Total Recall sequel at one point. He turned it down, and all I can say is that I wish he would have done the same thing with Clockstoppers. For fans of The Next Generation, you'll be happy to know that Star Trek Nemesis opens this December. And while Frakes isn't directing that project, he will be back in form as Riker. As for Clockstoppers, it's just a waste of time.

I brought this film 4 nights ago and have to say that if you do like cheesy film good humor then this is a hit. I think it's a good piece of hollywood especially as John (trek guy) made it, something different to all that other rubbish out there at the moment (like Matrix Revolutions, what a let down!). In the U.K it's dead cheap on DVD (around £9.00). Good family movie.
