Drive Angry is the latest film to try and tap into the glorious exploitation craze of the 70's and while it certainly has a fair share of insanity and a much welcome trashy sensibility, it comes up a little short. Where films like Piranha and Machete managed to excel. Nicolas Cage plays a calm and collected individual who escapes from "prison." His mission; to save his grand daughter from the evil clutches of a religious cult. He's aided by a tough as nails Amber Heard. Hot on their trail is William Fichtner's suave (and mysterious) accountant.

There is an interesting subtext here that I'm not going to go into, but should you decide to see the film, keep in mind that the "prison" Cage breaks out of may not be what you're thinking. Simply put, this movie is nuts and that is, perhaps, its most charming feature. The most compelling presence in Drive Angry is Fichtner. He pretty much steals every scene he's in. Director Patrick Lussier and crew (who also brought us that My Bloody Valentine redo a couple of years ago) have been making a big deal out of the fact that they actually shot Drive Angry in 3D rather than taking the post conversion route. And while the 3D gimmick suits this film, Avatar it ain't. Drive Angry would work well as part of a double bill with Kevin Smith's upcoming Red State. Both movies poke fun at religious extremism, but I'd say that Drive Angry one up's Red State because it isn't interested in delivering a message. With Cage in the driver's seat, this flick is fittingly over the top. I suppose with a title like Drive Angry, you know what you're in for. Again it's not Driving Miss Daisy Angry.
