James Moll's excellent (and candid) documentary Back and Forth delves into the career of the Foo Fighters. Front man and Foo mastermind Dave Grohl (who rose to fame as the drummer for Nirvana) proves to be both affable and extremely accessible as he discusses everything from the death of Kurt Cobain to the formation of the Foo Fighters. Back and Forth isn't only a grand celebration of this band's music but an intriguing and insightful look at the creative process. Grohl talks openly about the replacement of specific band members and how these choices effected him both personally and professionally.
Back and Forth doesn't shy away from getting personal as it delves into a potential band implosion and one member's bout with drug addiction. Even though Back and Forth tap dances around certain issues (such as Grohl's own battle with addiction), I was riveted and entertained by every frame of it. From an awe inspiring performance at Wembley Stadium to a look at the making of Foo's hilarious music videos, to the recording of the band's latest record (which Grohl and crew did in his own home with the aid of a few remarkable guest musicians), Back and Forth emerges as a joyful and intimate expose on music, the creative process, friendship, and family. On a final note, I saw this film with a couple of viewers who weren't familiar with the band and even they walked away enlightened. Seek this movie out!
