This Forgetting Sarah Marshall spinoff is sloppy and chaotic, but given that Get Him to the Greek is a broad, R rated comedy about sex, drugs and rock n' roll, I suppose that's perfectly appropriate. Taking a page from the playbook of one of the all time great bro-mance road movies--I'm referring to Martin Brest's outstanding Midnight Run--this raunchy comedy finds British rocker Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) accompanying Jonah Hill's record company peon from Europe to L.A., where the partying super star is expected to take part in a special anniversary performance. Naturally, chaos follows this unlikely duo wherever they go and getting Snow to his destination on time may prove to be an impossible task. Hill (who is positively stellar in the recent Cyrus) is the straight man to Brand's wild and crazy Snow. There are huge laughs here, and most of them come courtesy of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' blowhard record executive.
As Snow's on again off again lover, the generally understated Rose Byrne also gets quite a few chuckles. Get Him to the Greek does venture into some dark territory--particularly when Colm Meaney shows up as Snow's asshole father--but overall, this an improvisational farce with very little to be taken seriously. This flick is a bit sluggish in the mid section and a bizarre encounter between Snow, Hill, and a most unlikely female character, feels like a major misstep (it reminded me a little of the final moments of Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy, only without the heart). Still, Get Him to the Greek is raunchy fun. Just don't go in expecting the surprising sincerity and insightfulness so prevalent in director Nicholas Stoller's Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
