Wilco is band I greatly admire. While they've never been a hot commodity in the rock world, that hardly diminishes their talent. Record sales have never dictated quality.

In the fascinating documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, film maker Sam Jones chronicles the making of Wilco's latest release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. When starting this project, Jones and many others close to the band, were certain that this would be Wilco's big breakthrough as artists. Unfortunately, things didn't quite go as planned.

Going into this picture, I already new the history behind Wilco, and I also new what direction this documentary was going.

There was much hoopla behind Wilco's latest album, and many in the rock world were utterly disgusted when Reprise Records dropped the band from their label approximately twenty-four hours after hearing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot for the first time. I, for one, was appalled. After Reprise dropped them, I had a chance to see the band perform live. It seems that Wilco wanted to tour a bit while shopping for a new label. It was a chance to break in some of the new material, and we get to see some of this in the film.

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is an intimate and insightful look at the recording process, and while it would have been nice to see the actual songwriting process, I guess some things are little too personal to see on screen.

In I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, we get to see the band goof around, and thrill audiences with their passionate live performances, but this film gets dark as well. There are harsh lessons learned in this picture, and through the course of the movie, we even see one Wilco member leave the band. And while Jeff Tweedy has been known for being slightly self absorbed, even he gets his feelings hurt. This movie will certainly delight Wilco fans the most, but I encourage music fans in general to see it as well. It's an interesting look into what motivates the record industry. And while I wouldn't necessarily call Reprise villains (there reason for what they did was valid enough), there is something to be said for artistic integrity, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one ambitious album. One listen is hardly enough. In fact, I'm listening to the album as I'm writing the review, and this movie makes me appreciate the record even more.

Above all, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is about the music. Wilco is a terrific band and I suspect that a few years down the road, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot will be heralded a classic. And on an ironic side note, Wilco was picked up by a new distributor, but I won't reveal their identity in this review. I will say that in the end, justice was served.

Wilco is my favorite band and I think the fact that they were able to hoodwink the music business (however unintentionally) is one of the funniest stories in the history of modern recording. I'll have to admit that from a fans standpoint the film was disappointing. I was hoping for a lot more music and a lot less tedius waiting around. I understand that this is all part and parcel of the music world and a point they were trying to get across, but I think they belabored it. I am really alot more interested in the music than the machinations of the music business and the behind the screens squabbles of the band members.
