Every now and then a film comes along that redefines the comedy. A movie that has you laughing so hard that your sides ache. Joe Dirt is such a film. This movie is hilarious from start to finish and features a truly inspired turn by funny man David Spade. Without doubt, Joe Dirt is the best picture of the year thus far. By the way...APRIL FOOLS! All kidding aside, Joe Dirt is a bad movie.
David Spade is Joe Dirt, a clueless redneck (the term white trash seems a bit harsh) who yearns to find his parents who abandoned him as a young boy. Dirt finds himself being interviewed on a live talk radio show, where he tells his tragic story, and we the audience are subjected to his stupid flashback sequences.
Boy, that Hollywood strike is looking good. No more Joe Dirts. This movie is absolutely ridiculous. Spade can be a funny guy. I liked him in Tommy Boy and loved his Hollywood Minute sketch on Saturday Night Live. And although I'm not really a fan of Just Shoot Me, he's obviously doing something right on that show, because he's certainly made a name for himself there. I think I laughed twice in Joe Dirt, and it was out of sheer boredom. I couldn't believe a studio would actually be willing to fund this picture.
This current onslaught of crappy comedies (see Head Over Heals, Saving Silverman etc.) has got to stop. I can't take it anymore.
Is there no dignity left in the world? Thankfully, Joe Dirt seems to be dying a quick death at the box office indicating that many movie goers are more intelligent then they are given credit for. It just goes to show you that it all starts with a good story. Putting David Spade, Kid Rock, and the brilliant Christopher Walken in a movie doesn't guarantee a hit. The insipid Joe Dirt is living proof of that.
