If Hangover 2 represents what a sequel shouldn't be then Kung Fu Panda 2 represents the flip side of that coin. Not only does this winning sequel dazzle with sensational animation--in one of the film's most breathtaking sequences, a skilled film-making team effortlessly alternate from computer animation to old school hand drawn animation to startling effect--but it dares to venture into some pretty edgy territory, particularly for a cartoon. In this lively, heartfelt follow-up, our favorite panda Po (voiced by a lively Jack Black)--aided by the Furious Five and a few new warriors--takes on a fierce peacock (yes, I said peacock--Hilarious!) It seems this particular Peacock is hell bent on destroying the art of kung fu with a destructive secret weapon.

The welcome addition of a subplot involving Po's past lends dramatic depth to an otherwise action packed, vibrant, and funny adventure for audiences of all ages. There will be some who are quick to point out that the Furious Five takes a back seat to Po's story (duh--its called Kung Fu Panda) and while this may be true to a certain extent, our fierce panda's buddies serve a distinct and singular purpose. Without their help, it would be near impossible for the goofy but evolved Po to take on the hordes of baddies he's forced to contend with throughout this picture. At any rate, I'm sure the Furious Five will be fleshed out in the potential third film which is set up in splendid fashion. Rather than focusing on the villain or subjecting the audience to a typical cliffhanger, Kung Fu Panda 2 wisely and effectively ends on a note that suggests Part 3 will be big on action but have a potentially huge heart as well. This is an outstanding film.
