Sometimes a film comes out of nowhere and wins you over with its warmth, heart, and sheer simplicity. Last Chance Harvey is such a film.

In this wonderful movie Dustin Hoffman is Harvey Shine, a commercial music composer at a crossroads in his life. Things aren't going well at work, and he fears that by the time he gets back from his daughter's wedding in London, he might very well be out of a job. Still, he attempts to make the most of his brief stay in Europe. Harvey's first evening abroad doesn't start out well as he learns that his daughter has asked her stepfather to give her away at the wedding. While certainly hurt by his daughter's reveal, he realizes that this is her big day so he has no choice but to accept her decision. Then, the inevitable happens. Shortly after the wedding, Harvey misses his plane back to the states, so he's forced to spend another evening in London. When stopping for a drink at a café, Harvey meets Kate Walker, a local woman with issues of her own. At first, it doesn't appear that these distinctively opposite personalities will have anything in common, but before long, a strong bond does develop and the fashion in which these two wonderful human beings lift each other up, is both subtle and poignant.

Last Chance Harvey has a "Before Sunrise" ring to it. The bulk of this Film simply revolves around a man and a woman walking and talking. Granted Hoffman and Thompson are considerably older than the central characters in Richard Linklater's outstanding film, so this lends an entirely new dynamic to the proceedings. This courtship is more about two broken down souls who bring out the best in each other than it is about an instant love connection.

Last Chance Harvey does occasionally stray away from the walking and talking scenario, and when it does, it goes off on strange but immensely entertaining tangents. There's a bit in which Kate's mother believes that her next door neighbor is a murderer. A seemingly out of place, but surprisingly hilarious subplot.

Of course Last Chance Harvey is really about its star players. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are unbelievably good together. Two crafty veterans at the top of their game. Hoffman is warm and sincere (his toast at his daughter's wedding dinner is positively heartbreaking), but he still manages to incorporate a little bit of that neurotic sensibility that we see in many of his characters. Emma Thompson is classy and vulnerable (her speech at the end of the picture is equally heartbreaking), and it's fun watching her turn that prim and proper label completely upside down.

Yes, Last Chance Harvey is unapologetically sentimental. In fact, some audiences have been turned off by the "An Affair to Remember" inspired final act. True, the movie does go a little too far but the undeniable chemistry between Hoffman and Thompson more than seals the deal. This is a feel good movie and these great actors make Last Chance Harvey well worth recommending.
