Oh boy, where to start? I guess I should start by confessing that I really enjoyed the first Legally Blonde. I found it light, simple and sweet, and felt that the delightful Witherspoon really exuded the charm and likability that needed to come across to make the movie work. Given that the first film made a killing at the box office, a sequel seemed inevitable, even though it's clear there really wasn't a need for one. Welcome to the world of the completely unnecessary sequel.

In Legally Blonde 2, our fearless, blonde heroine Elle Woods heads off to Washington in order to champion legislation banning cosmetic testing on animals. This after she discovers her dog's mother has become a victim of laboratory experimentation. Before long, she's making friends (and enemies) with various Washington types who take an interest in her and her agenda.

Basically, Legally Blonde 2 is Legally Blonde 1 in Washington, but it isn't
nearly as sweet or charming, despite the efforts of Witherspoon. She does
everything she can to bring the movie to life, but by the time she finally gets to her big, rousing, all-to-obvious speech to Congress, I just didn't care. I was completely bored, and found very little to laugh at in this movie.

Witherspoon certainly oozes the likability factor, only this time she's
working with a screenplay that's just legally bland.

Legally Blonde 2 attempts to promote everything from animal rights to gay
rights, but does so in ways that are so ridiculous and over-the-top that I
couldn't even watch the movie with a smile on my face. This stuff just wasn't funny. It was like watching a comical version of John Q or I Am Sam.

Legally Blonde 2 takes on weighty issues but fails to address them with any kind of intelligence. I love a good comedy and I'm all for funny and dumb, but this sequel has precious little of the former and far too much of the latter.

Red, White and Blonde does have a few sweet moments. It also offers up a
strong supporting cast of bit players including Regina King, Sally Field and
Bob Newhart. Unfortunately, none of this movie's strengths are able to save it from what really is; an unfunny waste of time.

In their attempt to create a sort of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for a new
Millenium, the film makers of Legally Blonde 2 forgot to inject smarts and
passion into their movie. Even though Elle Woods was fashioned as a
stereotypical blonde, there was a certain intelligence to her in the first movie. Legally Blonde 2 serves as nothing more than a strong argument for tough legislation to ban bad sequels.
