In the 80's, slasher films were being released as frequently as romantic comedies are being released today. My how things have changed. If you ask me, some of those 80's pictures were made with far more love and care. I'll take 1981's "Happy Birthday to Me" over 2008's "Fool's Gold" any day of the week.

My Bloody Valentine is yet another redo, but this one's pretty fun. Based on the 1981 little seen slasher gem of the same name, this reboot takes place in a sleepy little mining town and features a crazed killer who runs around in a mining mask, hacking unsuspecting victims to pieces. What's particularly noteworthy about this killer is that he commits these horrific acts in glorious 3-D. You haven't seen an eye pop out of it's socket until you've seen it in the third dimension. Talk about your eye-popping special effects.

My Bloody Valentine doesn't feel so much like a homage to 80's slasher horror as it does a product of that time. The only true differences between the original film and this one, are the vastly superior make up effects and the startling, reach-out-and-grab-them 3-D images.

As for the story, it is a processed one but that's common practice in this particular genre. In My Bloody Valentine, there's a murder mystery, and while the inevitable reveal of the killer's identity is hardly groundbreaking, I doubt that this film's core audience will give a crap. They're coming for the gore and they're going home happy. This is an rated R picture and it doesn't skimp on the gooey red stuff.

There's a certain level of enthusiasm behind this glorious piece of slasher trash. You can tell director Patrick Lussier had a grand old time every step of the way. Be it the inclusion of 80's genre film icon Tom Atkins (Halloween III, The Fog, Creepshow, Night of the Creeps), the over the top gore, the immensely entertaining 3-D effects, or what is, perhaps, the greatest extended nude scene in slasher cinema history, My Bloody Valentine has no shortage of memorable attributes.

I plead with you though. If you do go to see My Bloody Valentine, see it in 3-D. There really isn't any other way to experience it.
