In celebration of Earth Day (for those who choose to celebrate Earth Day), Disneynature proudly presents Oceans, a gorgeous nature film that offers up breathtaking vistas that are just as awe inspiring as anything in James Cameron's juggernaut Avatar (which, not surprisingly, was released on DVD the very same day Oceans debuted in theaters). Of course what separates Oceans from the likes of Avatar is in the knowing that everything you'll see in this underwater documentary, is real. The film making team that brought us the insect opus Microcosmos and the beautiful bird exploration Winged Migration turn their sights on Earth's oceans, and through the power of spectacular cinematography, they've crafted a serene look at a magical world that exists right here on our very own planet.

Highlights include footage of the elusive Blue Whale in its natural habitat, and a spectacular crab sequence that plays like a climactic battle in an action movie (think Lord of the Rings or 300). Oceans isn't quite as spectacular as last year's Earth (which was essentially a cliff notes version of BBC's Planet Earth series) and I could have done without the slightly intrusive Pierce Brosnan voice over, but this is still a film well worth checking out. As was the case with Earth, I'm a little bewildered as to why Disney didn't release this film in Imax, but Oceans is a visual feast regardless of what format you see it in.
