I never thought in a million years that this film would actually be good. Perhaps my low expectations helped. Whatever the case may be, the creative Osmosis Jones really made me laugh.

Osmosis Jones is part live action and part animation. The story revolves around a zoo keeper (a hilarious Bill Murray) who isn't known for his good personal hygiene. In fact, the guy is an absolute wreck despite pleas from his loving daughter to take better care of himself. Little does Murray know that inside his body, there is a whole team of do gooders trying to keep his body safe from germs. The story within Murray's body revolves around Osmosis Jones (voiced by Chris Rock), a renegade cop who always seems to screw up. He teams up with a cold tablet (voiced by Frasier's David Hyde Pierce) to prevent a new germ (voiced by Laurence Fishburne) from taking over Murray's body.

Many of the jokes in this picture are quite funny. Each inner portion of Murray's body is set up as a different type of location. For example, his brain is like City Hall, while his bladder is a kind of a cruise ship departing dock. The Osmosis storyline is set up like a buddy cop picture (ala Lethal Weapon) in which the two partners hate each other at first, but then learn to respect one another. There is some great vocal talent here as well including William Shatner, Ron Howard and pop sensation Brandy.

The live action stuff is directed by the Farrelly Brothers and they do what they do best. Namely gross out the audience with zit and fart jokes. However, this is far more tame than their other stuff, as this is a picture for the whole family. Bill Murray is great as a single father who lets his health go to hell. Rounding out the terrific live cast are Molly Shannon and Chris Elliot. The animation is surprisingly strong. Particularly towards the end in which our hero does battle with an evil germ on the end of an eyelid. Much of the dialogue and story situations are quite creative giving insight into what the human body is actually doing before going through a simple motion.

A lot of this picture reminded me of the underrated Innerspace. We've got to pieces of action going on at the same time. The stuff outside and the stuff within the body. I also like the overall message this picture delivers. We all need to take care of our bodies because you only live once. This message is presented in a most unusual, and highly imaginative way.

Although some of Osmosis Jones is far from perfect, it seems like perfection when you look at all the other films playing in theaters right now. It's also one of the few decent pictures out there for families. Osmosis Jones is good spirited fun with a great message to boot. Go check it out.
