Precious (which was originally titled Push not but a year ago--the title was changed as to not be confused with that dull Dakota Fanning film) is a dark, gritty, inspirational look at a young woman and her struggle to break free of an incredibly abusive upbringing. Lee Daniel's absorbing film has garnered the attention of high profile entertainers like Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry since it's well received debut at The Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. In Precious, newcomer Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe plays the title character in heartbreaking fashion. This is clearly one of the year's strongest performances. Precious is a film that really sticks with you. And in fact, I've thought a great deal about this movie since seeing it last January. Its a tough, haunting film that nails you over the head with unforgettable moments. As effective as Sidibe is in the lead, wait until you see Mo'Nique's terrifying turn as Precious' abusive mother. This performance is so deep it cuts like a knife. Mo'Nique's final monologue in this picture is positively chilling. While her Mary is a complete and utter monster, there's a certain level of sympathy here that somehow manages to keep this sorely misguided individual, human. Precious is a story about a battered teenager who wants nothing more than to stop the chain of violence that has plagued her for her entire life. In that respect, Precious plays a bit like a contemporary version of The Color Purple. Precious isn't an easy film to sit through, but there is certainly light to be found at the end of the tunnel. This is one powerful movie.
