September Dawn may just be the fifth funniest movie of the year (right behind Superbad, Knocked Up, Hot Fuzz, and The Simpsons Movie), the only thing is, this bogus telling of the Mountain Meadows Massacre is trying to pass itself off as a serious drama. In case anyone is wondering, September Dawn isn't opening in many LDS communities such as St. George where the Boneman and I reside (I drove down to Mesquite, NV to see it - my loss). I'm guessing it isn't playing locally, because the theaters were besieged with hate calls from unhappy members of the church who didn't want this filth being seen by the movie going public (similar such business surrounded The Passion of the Christ, but Mel's baby went on to gross over $300 million domestically). I'm really bugged that September Dawn didn't open here. Not because I blew hard earned cash on gas to get down to Mesquite to see it, but because there was absolutely no reason for intelligent people of any faith to fear a film this ridiculous and laughable. Home Teachers has probably done more to besmirch the image of the church than September Dawn ever will. Anyone who watches this movie and fears that it will scare folks away from the church are out of their mind, and anyone who watches this film and takes it at face value are equally insane.
Are members of the church really so outraged by this trivial, insignificant little movie? Pretty much everything you've read about the mediocrity that is September Dawn is true. All the Mormon characters in the film are drawn as villainous crazies while all non-members are innocent victims of the malicious Mormon monsters. The film is biased, hateful, one sided, underdevelolped, laughable, poorly acted (save for Jon Voight and Terence Stamp who could play a walking turds and bring it off), overly long, and shockingly absurd on just about every level. Director Christopher Cain (who made the stellar Stone Boy, and the brat pack western Young Guns) actually attempts to make a silly metaphorical connection between the tragic events of 9/11 and the Mountain Meadows Massacre (which also happened to take place on 9/11 way back in 1857). He would have you believe that both of these tragic events were caused by crazed, religious zealots. What a moron. Look, I'm not LDS but I know when I'm being fed a heaping bowl full of crap and that's what September Dawn is - a steaming pile of utter bullshit! Passion of the Christ was also met with derision and consternation, particularly from the Jewish community. The difference is, I didn't walk out of that film thinking to myself--"those damn Jews killed Jesus!" That's not what the film was about. September Dawn, by contrast, simply sets out to make Mormons look like murderous thugs. The agenda is plain and simple. There is no real story or character arcs to back up this claim. Furthermore, this film commits the additional sin of virtually putting the audience to sleep. It's a complete bore. It shoots itself in the foot early on and hobbles painfully to it's lame conclusion. Seriously folks, there is no reason to be offended by a film this stupid.
