Annette Benning and Julianne Moore are in top form as Nic and Jules, a married lesbian couple whose lives are turned upside down when their teenage children (played by Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) make contact with Paul--the sperm donor responsible for helping bring Nic and Jules' kids into this world. Paul (played by an entertaining Mark Ruffalo) is a carefree player without a care in the world but upon meeting his newly acquired family, he can't help but get involved in their lives. Benning is perfectly shrill as a workaholic while Moore is sweet and vulnerable as her approval seeking companion. There are a few moments in The Kids Are All Right (not to be confused with The Who concert film of the same name) that are downright uncomfortable to sit through, and while the ending of the picture left me a little bit cold--Ruffalo's character is rather short changed if you ask me--I quite enjoyed eavesdropping on the lives of these engaging (if a tad flawed) characters.
