Actor Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction) makes his directorial debut with this gritty, quietly devastating film about a family and their horrifying secret. From frame one, Roth sets a tone that is gloomy and unsettling. He also manages to get fascinating performances from his actors because of the way he sets up his shots. Instead of dazzling camera work, he sets up stationary shots allowing the actors to have long stretches of dialogue. Unfortunately, because of its delicate subject matter, this film will probably have a hard time finding distribution in the U.S. It's a shame because this is a film with important issues that are portrayed with uncompromising honesty. The open book ending will leave people discussing the film long after they've left the theater.
