This may be a pretentious way to open a review but Urban Legend is a Scream knock off. Since Kevin Williamson reinvented the slasher genre, there have been a slew of others including: Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer and a new installment in the Halloween series. This November will see the release of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and there is talk of a Scream 3. Enter Urban Legend which is clearly the worst of the bunch.
In case you're wondering, urban legends are those creepy little stories you hear growing up and aren't sure if there is any truth to them. Example: A combination of pop rocks and soda will make your stomach explode.
Before long, someone at a college campus is bringing urban legends to life and the students start dropping like flys. As in Scream, the evidence points at every major character in the plot. The movie starts off okay and offers moments of wit. Some of the urban legends I can even recall hearing as a kid. But then this movie degenerates into a bunch of nonsense that isn't even campy enough to be enjoyable.
Logically speaking, the killer's identity is ludicrous. If you see the film and put it all together, you'll see what I mean. But then logic is virtually non-existent in a film of this type.
Urban Legend is another lame hack-job out to make a quick buck. Hey, here's a nifty concept! How about making a horror film that's actually scary. If Hollywood keeps churning out junk like this, that concept will be an urban legend in itself!
