If Irwin Allen had made romantic comedies instead of disaster films, they might have looked a little something like Valentine's Day. In this shallow but harmless ode to the most loving of holidays, Pretty Woman director Gary Marshall uses Los Angeles as a back drop for a plethora of stories involving that funny thing called love. Included in the massive all star cast; Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, George Lopez, Hector Elizondo, Shirley MaClaine, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Queen Latifah, Kathy Bates, Eric Dane, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey, and Larry Miller. Going through all the various storylines that make up this overstuffed movie would take more space (and time) than I have, so I wont make the effort. I will say that screenwriter Katherine Fugate never dwells long enough on one subplot to give you enough insight into who any of these people really are, but a few of the scenarios are charming and warm enough to make the film worth checking out, particularly if you're looking for a harmless movie for date night. Furthermore, there are actually a couple of nutty twists I didn't see coming. Of the cast, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, and Hector Elizondo shine brightest. These performers were likable enough to make me forget about the scenarios and characters that came across as dead weight (i.e. Jamie Foxx/Jessica Biel, Queen Latifah, etc.). So in short, Love Actually Valentine's Day is not, but it never takes itself too seriously and this keeps it far from the realm of ensembles that try to be more than they actually are (see He's Just Not That Into You). Garry Marshall has been slumming it for years and while this doesn't rank alongside his best work (check out the underrated Tom Hanks/Jackie Gleason dramedy Nothing in Common), it's worlds better than the abomination that was Exit to Eden.
