I know that in Tool world that it is sacrilege to even think this, but I'm gonna say it: With the Thirteeth Step, Perfect Circle have become Maynard James Keenan's best band. As amazing as Tool's best album Lateralus is, this is just a little bit better. Most will disagree since I've already seen kids sell their copies of Thirteenth Step because it doesn't "rock" but hear me out. Keenan and other Perfect Circle regular Billy Howerdel have recruited James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins, and Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Manson and that is a mighty thing to behold indeed. The chemistry they have together far dwarfs the output of the first Perfect Circle record, and Keenan's voice has never sounded this good. He's always been a great screamer in the world of Metal, but sweet Jesus this guy can sing his ass off. On "Blue" he laments the chorus "Blue is such a lovely color for your eyes." And on "The Noose" Keenan sings "Making your amends to the dead with your halo slipping down to choke you." The best song Perfect Circle have ever done though is new single "Weak and Powerless." When Maynard wails "Desperate!" you can just absorb that emotion. The true highlight for me though has to be the fantastic cover of the great Failure song "The Nurse Who Loved Me." When Maynard sings Ken Andrews great line "She's got everything I need in pharmacy keys" I know that for at least a second, something is right with the world.
