Why is it that every time a punk band moves from an indie label to a major one, they end up sucking? Sadly, as AFI moves from Nitro to Dreamworks records, they are yet another casualty of this disheartening syndrome. Singer Davey Havok and company have been a staple in the punk community for 6 albums now, ferociously rocking their inner-Misfits-loving butts off.
Their past work has been very easy to like, with shout-along lyrics that get pulses racing and fists pumping. The first single, "Girl's Not Grey" is a great example of their former glory, with repeated shouts of the word "follow" over and over again in the chorus. Still it pains me to report that most of their major label debut is a muddled mess. Havok has always had a nasally voice, but this is getting out of control. I'd say that right now he sounds like a mix between Geddy Lee and that annoying ass from New Found Glory, and no, this is not a good thing. Cheesy Emo-acoustics ruin songs such as "Leaving Song," and "As God As My Witness." Why? There are even techno-beats on the song "Death of Seasons!" There are 2 or 3 decent songs here, but the rest is laughably bad. I highly recommend going back and listening to their past albums, because this one does them no justice. Sing the Sorrow is right.
