So who is dis Antibalas dem speak of today? Antibalas is an Afrobeat orchestra that serves as the perfect backdrop soundtrack for a heated (or should I say chill) bong rip session. Who Is This America is Antibalas' third - a mixture of reggae, spoken-word tantrums, and jazzy sounds and textures that find Antibalas waxing political. It's chock-full of political diatribes - anti-war and anti-commercialism anthems and the like. I actually had no idea who these people were until I saw the random demo hiding in the shelf of the local music store and decided to expand my mind with Antibalas' addictive grooves. I was intrigued as I popped it in, seven songs each with five minute intros and five minute outros. All tolled, Who is this America clocks in at nearly an hours' worth of listening pleasure - that reminded me a bit of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here - mostly in length.

The world-beat sounds are quite listenable, but the over-wrought politically-charged lyrics are tough to take seriously. Fans of A Tribe Called Quest or maybe Erykah Badu would like this kind of Afrocentric business, as would stoners who are getting tired of the Chemical Brothers.
