The first thing that I was inspired to do following my first listen to Dream To Make Believe, Armor for Sleep's first album on Equal Vision was to take a nap. Ben Jorgensen's voice is so sleepy and somber that it's like listening to Elbow on Demerol. This isn't always a bad thing, it's nice to have a disc in your arsenal that you can put on at bed-time and drift off with. You don't have to turn up the volume on one song and then down on the next. It's low-maintenance atmospheric music that, I should say, would make for an ideal background soundtrack for a make-out session.
The other interesting thing about Armor for Sleep is that they're about as unique a band as I've ever heard. How often do you hear a song that you can't immediately think of another band that they at least resemble - these guys are really playing their own game in a league of their own. True the vocals on "Phantoms Now" remind a little of Casket Lottery and the trippy voice effects of "Being Your Walls" remind me of Built to Spill. These guys play like they just woke up from a midday nap and went out into the hot sun to try and snap out of their torpor. That's the good thing about this band though, the chilled out vocals and music is what keeps you there
listening, or maybe you've just become too lethargic to get up and change the CD.
