Long-time duo Slug and Mac have come back with their fourth LP and debut on the punk-saturated Epitaph label. Don't let that confuse you. They may share the label with their punk cronies, but Atmosphere is as indie-rap as they come. They hail from Minnesota and have perfected their craft that mingles the old school efforts of De La Soul with recent genius acts like the Roots and Jurassic 5.
While Seven's Travels is an extension of their
previous efforts, it stands out in these so-called
'indie times.' Tracks like'Trying to Find a Balance," and "Reflections" reach both the
Mainstream and the underground, proving that they can battle among the best. "In My Continental," arguably the album's best track, achieves an engaging combination of fresh R&B hooks with dirty beats and rhymes.
Unfortunately, the album's 72 minute running-time and 19 tracks induce its own drawn out and boring atmosphere, often wearing out it's welcome. The album's strong points are scattered, while its monotonous moments keep it from being a more solid record. However, it's a must have for any underground devotee.
