Back in April of 2001 I had the opportunity to see one of Badly Drawn Boy a.k.a. Damon Gough's live shows in Salt Lake for a measly 5 bucks. What I witnessed that night is one of the most unforgettable shows I've ever seen. He clocked in at nearly a 3 hour set and the kicker was he only had one album out at the time. I thought to myself if only he could get some attention from the record-buying public this boy could go far. A little more than a year later Badly Drawn Boy has completed an entire soundtrack for the Hugh Grant film About a Boy, and boy oh boy has he ever outdone himself.
Gough has proven that with a huge budget he can go as far as his imagination can take him. In the song "Above You, Below Me" Gough adds scat drums and guitar to vocals and string arrangements that soar like wind through your hair on a cool breezy day. The song "Silent Sigh" is punctuated by a series of painful sighs that actually make you feel how sorrowful the lyrics are. The most amazing thing about this music is how well it works with the movie. Gough has created vocals and instrumentals that actually make the films characters seem more compelling and human. Badly Drawn Boy is definitely a talent to watch out for in the future.
