Greatest hits packages just seem to be tailor made for certain artists. Nobody needs the entire Hall & Oates or Howard Jones catalogs am I right? But certain artists such as this always have two or three great songs littered throughout each album in their career and best of comps help us sift through the rubble to get to the treasure.
The House DJ duo of Basement Jaxx is that kind of group for me personally. Every album of theirs has always felt like half brilliance and half disposable waste, so The Singles collection they released in 2005 seemed like a gift from heaven. If you've ever needed just one disc to keep asses shaking constantly, Basement Jaxx's Singles collection is a must-have to keep a party going.
The Singles collection solidly put a lid on the first phase of the Jaxx's career and Crazy Itch Radio has finally been released to start their second. What can I say to better sum it up than second verse, same as the first. Yet again there are brilliant moments such as the banjo-heavy "Take Me Back To Your House" and the horns & accordion driven "Hey U" is one of the best tunes they've ever concocted. But as always with the Jaxx, there are moments that are just head-shakingly obnoxious. Opening track "Hush Boy" is a flaming pile that's more concerned with rattling off items on a Mexican menu than being engaging and "Run 4 Cover" is so terribly monotonous that it'll have your ears doing just that. Half of this album is also filled with pointless intros to each track that hinder more that help and will put a callous on your right index finger reaching for the next button on your stereo to get to the actual songs. My overall recommendation for Crazy Itch Radio is this: go download the handful of great tracks because this is yet another Basement Jaxx album that just doesn't warrant owning -overall. That, or just wait out another six years for the inevitable Singles collection volume two, either will suffice.
