"Kevin Jones' Top 15" by Best Albums of 1999 (2000)
It's been a fantastic year for music fans. Even Top 40 fluffy pop stuff has been reasonably interesting. Plus solid releases by big leaguers such as The Peppers, NIN, Rage, Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, Korn, Bizkit, Blink 182, Filter, Bowie--there's a lot of honorable mentions. But you'll find the 15 best listed above.
James has been around since the second British invasion--tagging along with such seminal acts as The Smiths, The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. Darlings of the critics, they've never managed much of a splash into the Alternative Mainstream (if you'll forgive the oxymoron) and up until Millionaires, I'd considered them the greatest band in the world that never made a great album. Believe me dear readers, they have now--Millionaires is flat out "money."
Sparkling with wit and brit-pop charm, it's intelligent, accessible and glorious. Lead singer Tim Booth has never been in better voice and the gents sound every bit as hip as Beck, while remaining faithful to their patented sound and even giving a nod to the salad days of the 80's. As of yet it's only available as an import--but I couldn't wait, it's worth a mint.
