The name might not be automatically familiar with some of you but Brendan Canning is one of the most important players in one of Canada's greatest super groups Broken Social Scene. Broken Social Scene's roster (as some of you may well know) is like looking at an all-star lineup of heavy hitters. Feist, Emily Haines of Metric, Amy Millan of Stars, Jason Collett, Andrew Whiteman of Apostle of Hustle and lead vocalist Kevin Drew all hold a place in this band and every single member has up to this point released their own solo records, or sets thereof. Bass player Canning was the only one up to this point not to branch out on his own but all changes now with Something For All Of Us…and wouldn't you know it, there's something for nearly all these members (and a slew of other guests) to contribute to.

Canning is kind of known as the quiet one of the bunch and that is certainly true for the proceedings of this entire album. His hushed Elliott Smith like vocals are on full display on more intimate tracks like "Snowballs & Icicles" but most of the album sees his vocals blending in like wallpaper to the huge arrangements that surround tracks like the horn-heavy "Chameleon" and the storming pulse of the rockin' title track. Nearly every B.S.S. member lends a hand to Something For All Of Us… and if you think it ends up sounding pretty much like a Broken Social Scene record you'd be correct. But Canning's soothing voice over all of it makes you wonder why Drew doesn't let him lead more often because to be honest, I think Canning's solo record is just a smidge better.
