If nothing else this record shows that these wet-behind-the-ears Brits have in their hands a world of potential. And although I very much recommend that you check this record out, it's pretty hard to suss out what to expect from song to song. In fact, the album sort of comes at you in 3 pretty distinctive vignettes.

They come out of the gates with "Men Together Today," which is loud and reckless and certainly smacks of the Pixies in general and of some of the ruder tunes of fellow Brits The Coral in particular. This carries on until track 4 "Something Wicked," upon which they bring things down to an undeniable David Bowie like vibe. (circa "Space Oddity," "Scary Monsters"). No one could argue this point, but the songs through this mid-section bring a better appreciation for what these lads can do - and how distinctive and addictive is the voice of the captain of the ship Yan.

Just when you think you've got these guys pegged, comes act 3 where their influences are a little harder to place, unless you're me and know everything. I've heard them compared to the British invasion of the mid 80's - particularly Echo and the Bunnymen, which has a certain validity, but the trained ear goes down south at this point. (Bands at the bottom of the planet - a few higher profile, some that flew completely under the radar.) In order of recognition that would be The Church, The Chills and The Triffids - if you've heard of the Triffids or own them on vinyl you can officially consider yourself very cool.

Much like The Coral whose debut album was met with luke warm reaction from the critics, BSP has a world of talent at their disposal, and could very well bob to the top in much the same fashion as another band in which they bear a strong resemblance, Interpol.
