I guess if I thought that listening to better music would make you a better person, I'd get up on my high horse and hold forth about the evils of commodity-music like this--but the truth is, if listening to Britney Spears makes you happy then God bless. That's what music's all about.

There are things about this album that are pretty cool. Nevermind that the title-track, her sexy new hit, sounds just like her first hit "Hit Me Baby" or whatever--it's still a good radio song. Nevermind that she lip-synced it on SNL. (Actually, aside from the lip-syncing, she did a decent job of hosting the show and it should elevate her celebrity credentials a few notches and maybe, just maybe, prolong her career. Although if pop-music history can be trusted, her next album will be titled "Oops I did it again and nobody gives a crap." We shall see.)

Other than "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know," a song penned by Shania Twain auteur Mutt Lange, a lot of this album is forgettable filler. You'd think that someone in Miss Spears position could sit back and pick and choose from the best songs from the best writers in the industry--not the case. Spears is obviously eager to shed her goody-goody Mouseketeer image, in favor of a naughty little girl next door approach. There's a lot of sexy grunting and cooing and between many of the songs she engages in teeny-bopper chatter about boys, that makes the album sound like one of those Mormon road-show skits.

The lyrics to the last song, "My Diary," were penned by Spears and quite honestly I'm amazed that they left this track on the album. It sounds like the result of one of those contests where the winner gets to go in a real studio and record her prize poem as a song.

Much will be written, I'm sure, about her cover of the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction. It's actually one of the album's better tracks, but hearing Britney Spears bemoan her lack of satisfaction in the midst of her dream-come-true little career, certainly rings false. I can't get no girly action, she croons. Now that's a shame--maybe she just needs to try a little harder.

It's good to see this album get a bad review. I remember my sister loving this album when it came out nine years ago, and some critics writing positively about it as well, but I kept listening to it and thinking, "Huh? This is an album that sold millions of copies in its first week?" I always predicted that Britney would eventually become solely talked about for her celebrity status and not her music at all one day. This stuff was terrible.
