It's abundantly clear after one listen, that the new Australian art/punk duo Bumblebeez 81 (consisting of the brother sister team of Christopher and Vila Colonna) are heavily influenced by three other B's: Beck, Beastie Boys, and Bikini Kill. There are little splashes of Atari Teenage Riot, Sonic Youth and Le Tigre also scattered about, but the three B's always seem to be at the forefront. Chris Colonna's laptop beats mixed with his Thurston Moore sounding vocals are intriguing, especially on first single "Pony Ride" which, surprisingly enough, is getting heavy rotation on MTV's buzz bin right now alongside Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand. (MTV = indie credibility? Who knew!) The most fascinating aspect about Bumblebeez 81 though has got to be Vila Colonna's amazing rapping ability. Ranging somewhere between Erykah Badu and Peaches, Vila's rhyming skills are unorthodox and truly bizarre, but completely enthralling none the less. (Be sure to check out the track "Microphone Diseases") Overall The Printz is messy and challenging, but provides rewards with every successive listen. Bumblebeez 81 are definitely worthy of the buzz they're getting.
