This third release from Cake sounds very much like their first two, and there's nothing wrong with that. They have an undeniable mischievous charm, distinctive vocals and repetitive lyrics, with their tongue firmly planted in their cheek. In a fashion similar to Beck, they have virtually created a sub-alternative genre--Indie-style rock mixed with rap--yet folky and understated.

Cake offers layers of different flavors and the off-beat brilliance of their lyrics is definitely the frosting. "When You Sleep," starts off innocently but evolves into a horror film plot where a man's hand severs itself and crawls away to commit murder.

Like a midnight snack, you'll find yourself craving this album and having seconds. "Sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell," and Prolonging the Magic takes the cake.
