In alot of ways The Campfire Girls remind me of one of those bands that one of your friends is in, that everybody in town think is great, they've got a demo for sale at a few of the local Record stores and they play every other weekend at the bar. In truth they're a good bit better than this, but they play a style of music that seems trapped in a no-man's-land of sorts. It has alot of the trappings of Grunge, in fact Scott Weiland sings a little back-up and co-produces, and you can hear STP here and there.

You can also see that they might fit in somewhere between the Nickelback's and Puddle of Mud's, and the Trains and the Three Doors Down. In fact there are enough genuinely interesting moments on this record that I can see why a Scott Weiland has thrown his support behind them, but ultimately I think he's backing the wrong pony. There's some interesting guitar majesty in track four's "Pedestal." and "Broken Tooth" has a nice catchy chunky guitar riff and a nice poppy vocal that reminds me of the 90's band Belly, this is a song that might just land them some airtime. The track before it "Homework" might also be radio-friendly enough tune to land a spot on the rotation of a punkier-emo programmers playlist.

Ironically the albums finest moment is a simple acoustic guitar tune called "Tragic End" it's sweet and unpretentious for the most part, for a song about a dying man's wishes. Though they've made a decent record with Tell Them Hi, and I like to pull for the underdogs, I have a bad feeling that the Campfire Girls will never quite reach beyond the ranks of the also-rans.
