Hey everyone! It's Circa Survive -time for fun with androgyny! To be honest I was almost suicidally depressed after my first journey through Juturna. But I knew I needed to soldier on, so I steadied my plummeting spirits and gave it a few more goes. As we all know, first impressions of tough music are usually dead wrong, and sure enough the more I listened to this record the more it began to grow on me. At first the only thing keeping me from giving up on Circa Survive was trying to figure out if singer Anthony Green was born with a penis or a vagina. At some points in the record he could mistaken for either Cedric Bixler or Kerith Raven off The Emo Diaries #5.

Eventually, I have to admit that Juturna perked up my senses and grooved me. But be warned, there is no screaming on this album. If you like that screamo shit then Circa Survive is definitely not for you. Juturna is more the mellow morphine music, similar to Alexonfire without the vocal histrionics. The singer (who incidentally does sport a penis) as I mentioned is Anthony Green, who gave Saosin the finger in early 2004 so that he might man the mic for this new project.

Jaturna is pretty straight forward and goes by without any real standout tracks - on the other hand there are few track-skippers either. Circa Survive sticks to a dark, murky, gothic bent throughout Jaturna, for example the flowing grooves "The Glorious Nosebleed" are nice, but a little too atmospheric to keep your toe tapping. There are lots of serious song titles on Juturna but they belie some pretty cheesy and pretentious lyrics. "Always Getting What You Want," "Holding Someone's Hair Back," and "In Fear and Faith," don't sound all that bad until you follow the bouncing ball across the liner notes. They're enough to trigger your natural gag-reflex.

It's hard for me to find a lot to say about this band because I find it all terribly dull. It's slow and tends to drag along at a corpses pace. Still just because it didn't fill my genitalia with a sweet rush of blood, doesn't mean it won't tweak the nipples rings of those who enjoy this type of thing. Circa Survive is for the people that wear ten rubber bracelets on each arm and have black, mid length hair, and can use their long black fingernails to tear the cellophane off the case.
