Melding electronica with rock can be an extremely dicey affair. Some bands, like Primal Scream and Radiohead have just about mastered the art. While bands like The Music should try, try again - take it back to the lab and tweak the formula. New comers Cooper Temple Clause fall somewhere in the middle of that grouping. The rock part of this band is definitely their strong point. Coming off like a mix between Nirvana, Oasis, and even Grandaddy, Cooper Temple Clause can boast two of the greatest rock songs so far this year "New Toys" and the phenomenal "Blind Pilots." What gets them into hot water occasionally on this record however is the weak electronic production that is thrown about in spurts. "Into My Arms" is a great song until the noisy clanging is inserted at the end. And the final track "Written Apology" is a ten minute exercise in monotony that they "should" feel sorry about. It's a bitter way to end an album that has quite a few bright spots and alot of promise in general. Hopefully, Cooper Temple Clause will have the sense to tone down their electronic leanings in the future, and build their Cooper Temple on solid rock.
