Mr. Show alum David Cross is quickly becoming this generation's George Carlin in the sense that Cross is able to weave sufficiently funny juvenile humor with extremely insightful political banter. Just like when Carlin took it upon himself to bitchslap the Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations at every chance, Cross takes his potshots at the Bush Jr. administration throughout It's Not Funny. Cross laughs at the administration's choice of telling the American public that terrorists like Osama Bin Laden hate the United States because they hates liberty and freedom. When the truth of it is Cross says "is our stance with always supporting Israel and our military bases in Saudi Arabia. You know why I think that" BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HE FU*KING SAID! Are we a nation of six year olds? If the terrorists hated freedom, the Netherlands and all the other countries that are truly freer than us would be dust." Even though Cross's political rantings can be very funny at times, his Republican bashings throughout starts to get a little old. Also some of the bits, especially the one about the pair of electric scissors fall extremely flat. But what's great about It's Not Funny is that he'll go out on a limb and joke about the most extreme non P.C. things that you gotta give him credit for at least trying. Like when he talks about his friends that incessantly bitch that having kids is hard. "That's not hard? Cross says, "try talking your girlfriend into her third consecutive abortion. Now that's hard! You guys are just inconvenienced." And any music lover has to love that Cross brings up the ongoing trend of shitty music being played on the radio. "I don't listen to shitty music" Cross states. "Evanescence, P.O.D, Staind, Creed, they all seem kinda phony don't they? Manufactured, corporate and just shoved out there. It's that fraudulent simplistic 10th grade suburban white girl lyrics that shouldn't be coming out of 30 year old men. I would rather hear the death rattle of my only child than have to listen to that fucking shit." It's Not Funny certainly has it's funny moments overall, but his debut record Shut Up You Fucking Baby is the one I would have to recommend to Cross Beginners.
