Wow guys, fuck me to tears. This was once an incredible band, now they have just lost it. Seriously on their first two records (If Looks Could Kill, I'd Watch You Die, and Day of the Death) they churned out a killer brand of straight up, no bullshit punk rock with agro riffs and habit-forming sing along choruses, that I'd become physically addicted. This new album however, Death For Life along with their last album (Into The Valley Of Death) are weak sauce. For starters Efrem Schulz' voice sounds old and tired and the rest of the band sounds bored and depressed. The sad thing is that it hurts me to be this honest about a band I love. I can hear the Epitaph executives talking right now, "Hey guys your records sales are in the crapper, but we have a solution. You know your buddies Atreyu that you helped produce a while back? Well the kids are eating it up - so be a sport and start doing the screamo thing more, Start sounding like them and maybe we'll renew your contract." By this I certainly don't mean to suggest that Atreyu is a bad band, they're great, but it's just sadly obvious that DBS are trying to skim a little fat off the top of the screamo bucket for themselves. I will admit there are a couple of songs here that keep this new DBS effort's head barely afloat in the cesspool. "Don't Piss on My Neck and Tell Me it's Raining" is captivating and the first track, "Binge/Purge" is wild and aggressive, but I still have mixed feelings. If you've never heard this band before I suggest getting the older stuff first. It's better and by far more entertaining than this load of bilge. Sorry Death By Stereo I still love, you but step it up would ya.
