As I mentioned when I reviewed her last album, Diana Krall must be one of God's most favored creations. A gorgeous, leggy blonde, Krall wields a honey/sandpaper vocal gift that could melt the polar ice-caps, and , oh yea, she's also a world class jazz pianist. To my estimation, particularly back when I was a college kid, she's pretty much the perfect woman. Hopefully she's an impossible bitch, with god awful bad breath, because otherwise I have to conclude that life isn't fair.
In the tradition of Carly Simon, Krall has chosen to lend her amazing voice to a dozen standards and torch songs of the 40's and 50's. To her credit she refrains from showing off her prodigious piano chops, and plays it pretty straight. But by the same token she really doesn't bring anything to these classic American tunes that we didn't already know was there. Still if you're looking to set the mood for romance this is probably your best bet on the market.
