I hate to say it, but I have to give props to the great white dope Eminem. If it wasn't for his huge hit "Stan," most of us wouldn't have had the chance to hear this beautiful diamond in the rough. After "Stan" blew up the charts, Dido's No Angel album came out of obscurity and into the limelight. Now years later, Life For Rent tries to show that Dido isn't just a one trick pony. Thankfully she succeeds, but it isn't all of her own doing. Producing once again for her is her brother Rollo more famously known for his work in the excellent techno outfit Faithless. Rollo's smooth like butter production works well for songs like "Who Makes You Feel," and "White Flag" which feels like it could be bedfellows with No Angel's single "Here With Me." Dido's lyrics, though, can veer dangerously closes to the realm of cheese. "Closer See the Sun" finds Dido consoling a melancholy friend, and asking him to go for a walk with her and "you can wear anything, as long as it's not black." Yuk! But the ultimate plus that Dido has going for her is her warm as a blanket voice. It's familiarity like that listeners seek out, just ask a great singer like Sade. Dido defiinitely has that kind of potential.
